Great sound, compact, and quadruple the memory – same price

As a marketer doing a lot of research interviews, customer feedback, PR work, and the like, my share of recording interviews has made me all to familiar with botched recording, bad microphones, tinny sound, etc. After years of trying different audio recorders, I was left wondering if there was such a thing as good audio quality without shelling out some big bucks.

Convenient pocket-size Digital Voice Recorder with lots of room

Out of the box this pocketsize digital voice recorder by Olympus lets you record over 8 hours of material, however you can tweak things to get more juice out of it. Still, if you want to record interviews (for instance) for later semi-professional use (or even re-use, as in the case of an audio podcast) this little one MORE than does the trick. And when you are ready, just plug it into a USB port in your computer and pull the audio files from it much like you would from any other portable storage device.

So far, I’ve only encountered one “issue” with it (and it’s not something you cannot circumvent easily by throwing the files at a file conversion utility). It generates WMA files for every audio track it creates. Since I could care less about these Microsoft audio formats (I prefer my audio tracks to be in MP3 or AAC formats), I ended up tossing the files into iTunes, which did a nice job of converting them back into MP3s. Other than this minor inconvenience, getting this d.v. recorder/player has been nothing but joy!

Update (02/26/2007): I have gotten asked this question a couple of times, so I am posting in here how you go about converting the WMA files to MP3s using iTunes.

1) You drag the files and drop them (literally inside iTunes).
2) You get a screen saying “One or more of the songs you are adding to iTunes… are in the WMA format. iTunes will automatically conver them to the MP3 format so that they can be added to your iTunes library.”
3) Past that point, they become available through your library as MP3 files.

Early cameras of the 16th and 17th century were competent to project images onto paper or glass but the study of capturing, processing and printing the images took some more years. I own another Olympus recorder which I bought years ago and I paid a ton of money for it. It was money well spent. I was intimidated by the “digital” part of it for a long, long time, but once you get the hang of it, these are so fabulous.

you may need to format

I love everything about this recorder except that it created corrupt wma files. By corrupt I mean that after I downloaded the file to my pc, when I listened to the file it played fine for a while then the playback would hang in the middle of the recording. I figured out, and a few hours later was instructed by Olympus support, to format the recorder. So far that’s fixed the problem. Also, it’s in the manual but be sure you realize that if the battery runs out during a recording the file doesn’t get closed and you lose that recording. So don’t forget to press stop when you’re finished recording. One nice surprise is that the battery supplied is a 900mah NIMH AAA which is as far as I know is currently about the highest capacity AAA nimh available.

edit: There is an file copy of the user manual in the recorder’s memory that’s accessible when it’s connected to a pc and is considerably easier to read than the paper copy. If you care anything about it copy it to another location since if you format the recorder the file goes bye bye. It’s available on the olympus web site though.

edit: there is now a firmware upgrade that allows mp3 recording but the files are MUCH larger.

question: I finally got around to using the mp3 music player function. Rewind works but I simply cannot get it to fast-forward. If anyone knows the secret I’d appreciate a comment. thanks

edit: I just picked up an ETM-001 external microphone and it picks up much better than with the internal microphones. I wish I’d tried it ages ago.

Great little scale!

I love this scale. It is very accurate and has a nice little stainless steel cover on it that you can take off and wash separately, instead of trying to be careful not to soak the electronic parts when washing it. It weighs up to 11 lbs and does a great job with smaller weights too. I highly recommend this scale.

I had a Salton scale with multiple features that worked great for years. I spent more money on this Cuisinart scale thinking I would get what I paid for. Not so. The box shows a picture of a AA battery, it takes a special battery that I would have to go out and buy if it died. The scale only has two buttons: On/Off and Mode/Tare. The mode is for grams or ounces. It weights ounces in fractions such as 0.1 1/4 or 5/8 which seems odd. The Tare feature for weighing the container in advance of filling and weighing the contents quit working after just a few weeks. It was the feature I needed the most. Cheap design, features that don’t work…the Salton which is not sold on Amazon anymore was a much more sophisticated product. Buy something else, this one is not worth the money.

Great underwater picture taking alternative

What a wonderful alternative to taking underwater pictures. No need to spend a couple hundred dollars on a underwater housing case or a few hundred for an camera specifically made for underwater. Also don’t settle the the cheap one time use under water cameras. These cases allow you to take beautiful clear pictures using your own digital camera. I needed a waterproof case for my Canon PowerShot SD1100IS 8MP Digital Camera with 3x Optical Image Stabilized Zoom (Blue) and since I already owned a Dicapac for a another brand of camera I knew there would be no other choice for me than the DicaPac brand. This is a terrific way to protect your camera from water, sand and even snow. The optical lens sometimes interfere with the camera’s zooms lens, just make sure to hold the lens from the camera’s view. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED. AWESOME, It worked Great

I bought this last month for a trip to Belize and Guatamala. My first use was on a river cave tubing trip, so it only got wet off and on, but took great pictures. I was hesitant when I went snorkling at the reef off of Belize, but WOW, I was able not only to take pictures, but able to switch over to video on my camera. It’s not easy with the plastic, but it can be done. You can also see the screen on your camera when you are taking pictures. We went snorkling twice and I was in the water for a few hours, great product. My camera was safe and DRY all the time, no leakage.

accurately records musical instruments

As an elementary music teacher, I often have a need to make recordings. After researching my options, on a limited budget, I chose this digital voice recorder to record my grand piano playing vocal parts. At first I was very disappointed, until told to listen through the ear buds, not the speakers on the tiny device! What sounded awful at first, ended up being the best piano recording I have ever heard from a portable device, which used to be a cassette recorder! The cd’s turned out great.
Today I recorded a saxophone soloist as I accompanied his piece we are preparing for a state honors concert in a few days. I just sat this small recorder on my windowsill and I am absolutely amazed at the sound quality! It sounds as good as when the band director brought all of his equipment and large microphones to my studio!
Often middle school or high school musicians are required to make a recording for seating or auditions. I would highly recommend this WS-311M to do the job!

Poor Variable Control Voice Actuator Function

I bought this product for the sole purpose of recording seminars. Poor Variable Control Voice Actuator (VCVA) function ruins this otherwise excellent digital recorder.

VCVA records only when the device senses sound. Hence it helps trim out downtime and is an important time-saving function when listening to recorded material.

What I’ve found is that the VCVA is not sensitive enough to work properly unless the lecturer speaks directly to the recorder within about 3 feet. So even when I am sitting in the front row, this device still misses out reocrding most part of a lecture when I set it at the VCVA mode.

Addendum 6/29/08: My assessment of VCVA performance was based on the more sensitive of the two mic settings, the “Conf” mode.

Ease of use, just what I needed

I needed a small, discreet voice recorder. I was replacing my older micro-cassette tape recorder which is much more cumbersome. With the WS-311 I can keep it in a shirt pocket and it is un-noticed. I can use it while driving, in meetings, and for general use.

One of the uses for this is to record meetings in a “CYA” sort of mode. I do real estate, and sometimes transactions and closings can go badly. They then devolve to a “he said/she said” kind of thing. With this, at least I have a recording of what went on, dated and time stamped, for my own protection. It may not be admissible for a criminal trial, but to protect myself, it is invaluable.

It is light and simple to use. Downloading WMA files to the computer only requires a USB port and no software to be installed. Those files can then be used, e-mailed, copied, whatever you need.

My only quibble, and it is mostly my fault, is that when you try to play back a file at the highest volume, the recorder goes into a “system reset” mode. This is actually covered in the very comprehensive owner’s manual, but I must have missed it the first time through. The solution is simple: If you are stuck in reset mode, unplug the battery section from the rest of the recorder and then reconnect it. Then when you play a recording, just don’t use the highest volume setting and all works correctly.

I have mine set to record up to around 70 hours, but it can go higher than that if you want.

The only accessory I am considering now is a small lapel type microphone, otherwise the recorder is absolutely perfect as-is.

I haven’t used it as a flash drive or music player, I have separate equipment for that, so I can’t comment on the music end of the device.

Ease of use, ease of recording, ease in playback, ease of downloading. A good deal, and about $30-40 less than in a brick and mortar store.

I recommend this without reservation.
